Chapter Twenty-Two
hat night Freya was restless, her sleep broken by nightmares.
She dreamed of a stormy sea. Violent waves crashed, dragging pieces of the shoreline out into the water, leaving it jagged and thrashing. In the center of the storm, unfazed by the elements, she saw a naked woman with long black hair dancing around a fire. The flames burned black with tips of green that licked the air. A dark and ominous laughter cut through the raging wind. It had come from the demon from Freyaâs vision who stood on the outside of the circle and looked upon the spectacle with an evil smile across his distorted face. A human sacrifice lay dead, face down in the center of a six-pointed star drawn into the sand. Black candles burned at the tips of each point. As the woman continued to dance and chant, the storm grew in its fury, threatening to capsize a ship that was being thrashed in the raging waves of the sea. The last part of her dream was of a golden crown resting in a nest of red velvet. It was almost perfect, except for a missing jewel on one of its many tines of gold.
Freya woke to a crack of thunder. A storm was raging outside her window. There was a stale taste in the air as if the salt from the sea had permeated it. She sensed a shift. The scales had tipped. The darkness in the air now outweighed the light, and she knew from an ache deep down inside of her that something was terribly wrong.
She went out into the garden and looked out toward the water. The rain was coming down with such vigor that it was almost impossible to see the loch in the distance.
âFreya! Come inside. What are you doing out there?â her father called out to her, struggling to be heard above the rage of the storm.
Slowly, she walked back to the cottage. Her father made a fuss about her catching a cold, stoking up the kitchen fire so hot that she thought it might cook them both.
âWhat were you doing, my child?â he asked her.
âFather, I have received my second sight. The other night, my first vision came to me, a black lamb born to a sheep on Tomasâs farm. The next day that very sheep gave birth to a set of twins, one of which was black as coal. An omen of bad luck. Then last night I dreamed of this storm. Something terrible is about to happen,â Freya said, as she paced back and forth in the blazing hot kitchen, twisting her skirt in her hands.
âOh, my dear. I wish your mother was here to walk you through all of this. She used to have terrible visions but not all of them came to pass. Not all visions are as they seem, they are meant to be interpreted,â he said, trying to soothe her.
âFather, something is very wrong. Mary has even been having visions of descending darkness.
